PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment (PPE), is an absolute necessity in today’s work environment. As of May 15th 2008, the final rule on employer paid PPE came into effect that mandates that employers pay for PPE in the workplace. Employers need to be aware of their responsibility to insure a safe and secure work environment. Determining and supplying the proper personal protective equipment is their responsibility. Even if the employee elects to bring their own PPE, it is mandated by OSHA’s ruling 1910.132, that the employers inspect and approve the protective wear.
Since we know that every environment dictates the specific personal protective equipment necessary, we need to be aware of the choices available for the protection of each industry. As OSHA stipulates, ‘Protective equipment, including PPE - Personal Protective Equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact.’
Accidents on the job cost employees millions of dollars every year. Eye, respiratory, hearing, head, hand, clothing, foot and Fall Protection Equipment are a cost effective way to keep employees safe and a business in compliance with the law. PPE programs should be implemented in hazardous work environments. The hazards should be assessed and Personal Protective Products should be selected based on this assessment. Employees should be trained in the proper use of the PPE. Monitoring of the program will ensure its effectiveness.
